So you want to make a transmog, but you dont know where to start? Welcome to the beginners guide - In three simple phases; planning, getting and Mogging.

Phase One: Planning

Planning your transmog is important. Follow the steps below to complete the planning stage of your xmog.

PHASE ONE - PLANNING

  1. Find the focus of your set

  2. Choose the 'hero piece'

  3. Match Main pieces

  4. Choose other pieces

  5. Make a shopping list.

1- Focus of your set

The first part of planning your unique xmog, is to think about why you want to change the look of your gear. Did you wish to look tougher in PVP, or like Kayhlahn are you based on a fictional character - that has turned into something else, something more. Maybe you have a really cool weapon that you want to match your entire gear set on, or it is that tabard that took you forever to acheive. Have this clear in your mind as it will help you decide on pieces and how you want them to match.

2 - Choose the hero

Choosing the hero piece is Important. It will be the piece that you think represents the focus look you are after. It can be any item or fit anyslot. It will be the piece that if other pieces dont match it - you will choose another piece. This step is important, as with all the great models Blizzard has put into the game you could spend hours switching each item in and out as one doesnt match the other.

NOTE:This is why I choose the ingame addon Mogit; it lets you save pieces, add pieces to sets and even preview as you got through and save as you go along. The only downfall is that the addon appears to be Character Specific, so if you make a xmog while on one character, it wil not be there when you log into another one.

3 - Match Main Pieces

Main pieces are the pieces that will compliment your xmog, while stillkeeping within the look that you wish to make. This may included the shoulders, head (if you show helms), chest and legs, I like to work top to bottom, unless the main piece is the legs, like on my Shaman where the legs where my main piece.

NOTE: I find that sometimes the belt can be the hardest to match, I am very fussy, so I often like to find the belt as a main piece, as to me it is an important part ofr a transmog.

4 - Choose other pieces

I figure the other pieces are the smaller ones, like wrists or hands, and belt (if not considered a main piece). Look for similar colours and fabric looks (yes there are matching ones). I like to make sure the colours and look of the fabric are the same, you may not be as fussy.

NOTE: As part of this step I also like to match some alternative pieces, incase items I have found are no longer available.

5 - Make a shopping List

Go through all the thing that you need (including any alternative peices you have found. Make a list of all the instances and lvls of those instances you may need to farm, and any raids (include difficulty so you dont have it set to the wrong one).

NOTE: I love the feature of Mog it that if it dropd for you - comes up with a star letting you know that it is on your wish list. It also will tell you if something has the same model - including colour - it will show these as one item in the addon.
